PORi Course Curriculum Overview

The PORi Courses

All the PORi courses build on the PORi Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation. The Foundation course is a pre-requisite for all the other courses that we teach. Once a therapist has completed the Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation course they can then go on to complete any of the other core courses. There are two types of follow-on courses - PORi Core Courses (the ones in bright colors in the diagram) and PORi Adjunct Courses (shown in grey). Three of the core courses are focused on specific diagnoses but the Chemotoxicity & CA Exercise course enables therapists to treat across multiple diagnoses.

The PORi Curriculum

Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation

Designed as a didactic course, this program is open to physical therapists (PT), occupational therapists (OT), and speech-language pathologists (SLP). CEU credits are available based on specific state requirements within the USA. International therapists, Physicians, Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, and other interested providers are welcome to attend and may submit for CEUs individually to their governing bodies if required.

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in PORi’s structured, evidence-based approach to oncology rehabilitation, equipping therapists with the clinical knowledge, assessment strategies, and treatment frameworks necessary to deliver specialized, patient-centered care. Participants will gain proficiency in integrating PORi’s methodologies into clinical practice, including documentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Key Learning Areas
Therapists will gain an in-depth understanding of:
  • Cancer-related surgeries and patient sequelae from chemotherapy and radiation therapy
  • A clinical overview of oncologic emergencies relevant to rehabilitation
  • The physiological effects of cancer treatments on body systems
  • PORi-specific treatment techniques and patient management algorithms, including exercise prescription
  • Integrating the chronic disease model of care into PT, OT, and SLP management
  • Documentation strategies that meet CMS and health insurance requirements
  • The role of oncology rehabilitation within the broader legislative and clinical framework

The PORi-specific treatment models are introduced didactically, ensuring therapists develop the foundational knowledge needed for “CORE” modules. Additionally, this course provides inpatient/acute therapists with clinical guidelines and a deeper understanding of oncology patient care that they can apply in acute and inpatient therapy settings.

PORi CORE Course Modules in Oncology Rehabilitation

These courses build upon the PORi Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation course, reinforcing key concepts to ensure participants develop a strong clinical foundation. Previously covered material will be revisited to deepen understanding and enhance practical application in a clinical setting.

A significant emphasis is placed on lab sessions, incorporating live and/or video patient presentations as well as interactive class lab sessions where participants can practice and discuss the techniques learned to ensure clinical proficiency.

Three of the PORi CORE courses focus on specific oncology diagnoses and diagnosis groups: Breast Cancer, Head & Neck Cancers, and Pelvic Cancers & Lower Extremity Rehabilitation. The fourth CORE course focuses on the effects of chemotherapy and applies to patients with any cancer diagnosis, including those covered in the disease-specific CORE courses. At the conclusion of each module, participants must pass a written examination and, for in-person courses, a practical examination conducted in a live treatment session with a patient volunteer and the course instructor.

PORi CORE: Disease Site Specialty Courses

While there are therapeutic exercise facets to these courses, the primary treatment techniques taught during these courses will be manual therapy-based. In addition, there will be a significant emphasis on lab sessions, including live and/or video patient presentations which include patient interviewing, assessment, manual therapy treatment techniques and reassessment.  In-person courses will allow therapists to have hands-on experience with patient volunteers.
  • Breast Cancer Rehabilitation
  • Head & Neck Cancer Rehabilitation
  • Pelvic Cancer & Lower Extremity Rehabilitation

PORi CORE: Therapy Intervention Course
While there are some manual therapy elements to the Chemotoxicity & Cancer Exercise Management PORi CORE course, the focus is much more exercise prescription and neurologic interventions to address chemotoxicity symptoms, such as cancer-related fatigue, chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy, de-conditioning, balance, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. There will be a strong focus on live and/or video patient presentations where participants can practice the PORi exercise prescription protocols they are learning.
  • Chemotoxicity & Cancer Exercise Management

PORi Adjunct Courses

The PORi Adjunct Courses do not form part of the core curriculum but are ancillary courses for therapists who feel they wish to delve more deeply into a topic related to one of the courses they have already done or look to add specialist knowledge in a less common area such as brain & CNS tumor rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation etc. We constantly review and update our CORE courses to identify areas where adjunct courses would enhance the curriculum.

PORi Adjunct modules will usually build off one or more PORi Core courses and will either focus on a specific oncology diagnosis that hasn't directly been covered in one of the PORi Core courses, or a particular therapy intervention to address one or more cancer treatment side-effects or sequalae resulting from cancer that can span multiple cancer diagnoses.

Assessment Based Certificate Programs

All of the PORi CORE Oncology Rehabilitation Courses are assessment-based certificate programs, which means there are written & practical/oral exams that need to be passed at the end of each course. This allows PORi to ensure that participants who have completed the courses understand the material and are able to apply the clinical techniques, protocols and algorithms of treatment into their practice from the moment they complete each course.

Learning from Patients

A key component of the PORi  curriculum is we focus on learning for the patient AND from the patient.  PORi CORE courses involve learning from either live patient volunteers during lab sessions or via patient recorded video presentations that include not just treatment techniques but also patient backgrounds, objective and subjective evaluations and reflection on the treatment not only through therapist assessment but through patient reports as well.  In addition, in our live courses, there is practical exam on the final day where course participants will evaluate the patient and will directly provide treat under the supervision of the instructor or perform an oral practical on the critical thinking and plan of care execution.

These patient sessions are a unique and invaluable part of PORi's philosophy of ensuring that participants who complete our courses have a practical clinical skill set, patient management algorithm, and a deep understanding of the physiological impact that cancer and cancer treatments have on their patients.
PORi has been a game changer for me, it has fundamentally changed the way I practice and approach my patients. The impact the PORi treatment protocols and management system has had on my patients is profound...
