The PORi Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation is a 2-day, didactic continuing education course and serves as the prerequisite for all PORi Core and Adjunct programs. Designed primarily for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists, the course provides an essential understanding of oncology rehabilitation from initial diagnosis through post-treatment survivorship. It equips participants with core competencies in managing the complex needs of oncology patients, laying the groundwork for effective, comprehensive care.
This interdisciplinary course is also open to Physicians, Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, and other healthcare professionals seeking to expand their knowledge and improve collaboration in oncology rehabilitation. Participants may earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and can submit individually for accreditation through their respective governing bodies.
Key topics include cancer pathogenesis, the effects of cancer treatments, oncologic surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation side effects, and oncologic emergencies. The course introduces PORi-specific rehabilitation techniques, including exercise prescription, and guides participants on integrating the chronic disease model of care into PT, OT, and SLP management. Instruction also covers documentation practices that meet CMS and insurance requirements and provides an overview of oncology rehabilitation within the broader legislative and clinical framework.
By completing this foundational course, participants enhance their ability to deliver coordinated, patient-centered oncology rehabilitation across outpatient, acute care, and inpatient settings. The course also prepares them for advanced PORi CORE and Adjunct training.
